Welcome to the Apollo Academy for Health and Humanism!

Our second workshop/festival/retreat on the string quartets of the German Romantic masters, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms was a great success, enjoyed by both playing and non-playing participants. We are now pleased to announce our event for the extended weekend of September 10-13, 2020 entitled, A Schubertiade:  Chamber Music and Songs of Franz Schubert (1797–1828). This four-day health and chamber music workshop/festival/retreat will again be held at the Ratna Ling Retreat Center in Sonoma County.

Featuring the Alexander String Quartet, and additional distinguished faculty, the program is designed to provide a peak experience for the enthusiastic chamber music player, while providing a range of offerings in health and humanism that will appeal to both playing and non-playing participants.

Joining the Alexander String Quartet in our Schubertiade celebration will be two additional faculty artists: mezzo soprano Kindra Scharich and pianist Jeffrey LaDeur.

Also joining the Apollo Academy faculty this year will be the eminent political philosopher Dennis Dalton.  His lecture/seminar entitled, “Plato to the Present: Diagnosis and Prescriptions for our Current Afflictions,” will provide a unique insight into our current political and cultural dilemma.

Chamber Musicians, non-playing music aficionados and friends who enjoy mind-expanding experiences will revel in this four-day weekend in the redwoods, delving into beautiful music with the Alexander String Quartet, mezzo soprano Kindra Scharich, and pianist Jeff LaDeur.

For many, the consummate musicians of the Alexander String Quartet — Zak Grafilo (violin 1), Fred Lifsitz (violin 2), Paul Yarbrough (viola) and Sandy Wilson (cello) — need no introduction. Based in San Francisco, they have performed on five continents and garnered critical acclaim for numerous recordings, including their Beethoven and Mozart cycles.

Lieder and piano enthusiasts will enjoy the artistry of Kindra and Jeff, not only as they team up with members of the Alexander String Quartet to reveal the unmatched genius of Schubert’s music, but also as they conduct workshops on the performance of Schubert lieder.
